What is a mobile website?

Although mobile websites have been around for a little while now, they are still new enough to merit some explanation. To put it simply, mobile websites are special versions of it's "standard" website that is viewed when you go to a website on your mobile device.

For example, if you visit target.com on your computer, then visit target.com on your smartphone, you'll notice that their mobile website has been designed for the smaller screen. And if you look at the URL, you'll notice that they are different. You can't just shrink everything down to fit on the smaller screen size... it needs to be reformatted in a way that is built for the smaller screen.

When you're using your smartphone to surf the web, it gets very frustrating to view a page with a lot of content if it hasn't been optimized for the mobile world. You will inevitably have to double-tap to zoom and scroll over, etc. In contrast, if the website has been built for the smaller screen, it can be a great experience. Another example would be to visit your news websites (i.e. cnn.com). And again, you'll notice that when you go to cnn.com on your smartphone, it will detect that you're on a smartphone and redirect you to m.cnn.com.
